API & Backend Development

Clear rules behind every request.

We define server-side business rules, data boundaries, and permissions, and connect systems through APIs and integrations. This foundation supports both new applications and software already in use.

Discuss an API or backend

Problems this service solves

When the underlying rules become difficult to follow.

  • Business logic scattered across clients

Different interfaces implement different versions of the same rule, making behavior difficult to change safely.

  • Integrations fail without a useful explanation

Data transfers need validation, failure handling, and a way to understand what happened.

  • An API that is difficult to extend

Unclear contracts, inconsistent permissions, or tightly coupled data models make each new feature harder.

Engineering approach

A contract that both sides can understand.

Access checks belong alongside the protected operation. We document API contracts and important failure modes so changes can be assessed before they reach dependent systems.

  1. Model the rule

Identify valid data and transitions, including what must happen together.

  2. Define the interface

Specify inputs, outputs, errors, and permission checks for each operation.

  3. Plan for failure

Handle timeouts, repeated events, and partial work with deliberate recovery paths.

REST and GraphQL APIs
Interfaces shaped by consumer needs, with consistent inputs, outputs, and error responses.
Third-party integrations
Service adapters, webhook endpoints, synchronization processes, and background work where appropriate. Model providers are a specialized external integration, with validated responses, timeouts and usage boundaries.
Authentication and authorization
Access checks alongside protected operations, with consistent permission rules for each API consumer.
Data modeling and database integrations
Explicit data relationships and storage boundaries, with migrations planned around existing consumers.
Background jobs and event-driven workflows
Webhook handlers and asynchronous work with deliberate handling of repeated events, timeouts, and partial failures.

Technologies & integrations

Tools chosen for the job.

Node.js & TypeScript
Typed services and integration code where they fit the runtime and existing stack.
PHP
Backend services and extensions for PHP environments, including WordPress integrations.
REST & GraphQL
Different interface choices: consumer requirements and operational complexity guide the decision.

Existing systems & ongoing development

Modernize one boundary at a time.

A backend can often improve without a complete replacement. We can isolate an integration, clarify a data model, or introduce a new API while keeping existing consumers working. Versioning and data migration are planned around those dependencies. Cloud configuration and deployment engineering can be included within the agreed project scope, with release responsibilities defined in advance.

Before we begin

Questions about API & Backend Development.

Should the API use REST or GraphQL?

REST can offer straightforward resource and operation boundaries. GraphQL can suit clients with varying data needs. We compare the consumer requirements and maintenance cost rather than choosing by fashion.

Can you integrate an undocumented system?

We first establish which interfaces are available and what can be verified safely. Missing documentation may require investigation before a dependable integration scope can be agreed.

How do you handle repeated webhook events?

Where repeated delivery is possible, handlers need to identify events or operations already processed. The exact mechanism depends on the provider and the data model.

Can the backend serve more than one frontend?

Yes. Keeping business rules and access checks on the server allows different clients to use the same defined behavior, subject to their authentication and permission requirements.
